Many race courses use fixed navigation marks as part of the course. These marks can be
defined in your event just as with any other mark, but they must be re-defined each time.
TackTracker gives you the ability to define fixed marks that appear in TackTracker permanently.
You may also import paths and background images. These are defined in the Settings dialog,
accessed using the Settings Button:
Select the "Fixed Marks and Landmarks" tab. The Landmarks dialog looks like this:
You can add fixed marks and landmarks in two ways:
1. Type the name and latitude and longitude coordinates and click Add
2. Define your landmarks as Placemarks in Google Earth and save them as a KML file.
Then
click the link to import them into TackTracker.
For example, the illustration below shows two placemarks created in Google Earth, "Green Point
Monument" and "SYC Lighthouse":
You will find the same placemarks also listed on the menu bar on the left side under "My Places".
Right click on My Places and select "Save As"
Select "Save as type" to be KML (not KMZ), type a filename and save. You can now import your
landmarks using the blue Import link in the TackTracker settings dialog.
In TackTracker, your landmarks appear in blue:
Note that a landmark serves as a point of reference only. It cannot function as a course mark.
However, you can use a landmark to quickly and accurately lay a course mark when needed.
When laying a course mark on top of a landmark, it will snap to the precise landmark location.
Paths and Background Images
TackTracker is also able to import and display fixed paths such as shorelines and jetties and
background images such as photographs, maps or charts.
Both paths and landmarks are saved when creating a TackTracker TTZ file and may be published
to the web player.
Use the Google Earth Add Path tool
to draw a path in Google Earth. For example, you
can use your mouse to trace a shoreline. Give the path a name, then right click on the name in
the My Places menu to save the path as a KML file.
Use the same import process as described above for Landmarks to import the path KML file into
TackTracker. Your path will be shown when playing any races in the vicinity.
Use the Google Earth Image Overlay tool
to accurately position an image, such as a map,
in Google Earth over the terrain. When you have positioned the image, you may again save the
KML file and import into TackTracker. TackTracker will display the image when playing any
races in the vicinity.
Note: TackTracker will only display images that are stored on the local file system.
