Active Track
An active track is displayed in the track player and in the tables.
Current Position
The track player displays a boat avatar at the current position.
When a track is first loaded, the current position is the first point
in the track. As you navigate using the Navigation buttons,
the
current position moves.
Current Track
When multiple tracks are displayed, one of the tracks is the
current track. The navigation buttons drive the current track,
and all other tracks follow to stay in sync.
Bearing
The boat's heading, or angle in degrees that the boat is
traveling.
Deviation
The angle between the boat's heading and the direct line from
the previous mark to the next mark. Deviation is measured
separately for both port and starboard tack.
Event
A yacht race or other happening for which tracks are
simultaneously recorded.
Latitude and
Longitude
Coordinates representing a position on the surface of the earth.
Latitude indicates the distance from the equator (think North-South).
Longitude represents the distance around the earth from
Greenwich, England (think East-West).
Leg
A segment of a course between two marks
Mark
A mark of the course. Legs boundaries are computed from the
nearest track point to each mark.
Rhumb Line
An imaginary line straight line from the previous mark to the
next mark. TackTracker draws the rhumb line as a faint grey
line.
Speed
The speed measured by dividing the distance from the previous
track point to the following track point by the elapsed time.
Tack
A sustained change in direction.
Track
A sequence of logged track points. Each track point records
the latitude and longitude coordinates and time.
Track Library
TTX
A TackTracker saved event file, including all participating
tracks. Use to send an event to another TackTracker user.
VMG
Velocity Made Good
VMG is the speed relative to the Rhumb line. On the run or
reach, you may sail faster if you do not sail directly towards the
next mark. Compare VMG to compare the effective speed of
boats sailing directly towards a mark and those sailing at the
optimum sailing angle.
TackTracker also calculates VMG relative to the current Wind
direction. This is useful when the Rhumb line is not available
(as when training) or when the course is not true.
