Tacks Table

The Tacks Table displays a summary of all tacks sailed by the current boat in the current leg.

Note: If you have not defined a race course, it shows all tacks for the entire track.

The highlighted row indicates the current tack.  If you run the race player, you will see the highlight move each time the boat tacks.

You can also select a tack by clicking with the mouse, or using the up and down arrow keys.  Each time you select a tack, the player moves to the end of the selected tack.

Notice that the Tacks table indicates whether your boat was on Port or Starboard tack. You might wonder how this is done.  As TackTracker analyses your track, it estimates the wind direction, using the assumptions that you can't sail directly upwind, and that you normally tack through a similar angle when sailing upwind.  Unless the wind on the day was especially fluky, TackTracker will get it right.

You can override TackTracker's wind estimate by clicking on the Wind icon at the top right of the plot window.  See the section titled "Adjusting the Wind Direction" in Using the Track Player.


Tacks Table Columns:
  
Column
Description
 Track / Leg
The column heading indicates the current leg

Each row has a sequential tack number followed by a port or starboard tack indicator. 
 Distance (m)
The total distance traveled on this tack (in meters)
 Time (h:m:s)
The time spent on the tack
 Deviation (deg)
The angle from the direct line from the previous mark to the next mark.  This is a good indicator of height. 
 Bearing (deg)
The absolute bearing of the tack (angle of the line drawn from the first point of the tack to the last point of the tack.)
 VMG Wind
The VMG for the tack, relative to the wind
 VMG Course
The VMG for the tack, relative to the rhumb line
 Knots / Kmh
The average speed over the tack
Min Knots, Max Knots
The minimum and maximum speeds recorded for the tack
